A couple of weeks ago, after a rather exciting canter in a prelim test, I met another lovely highland owner who recommend trying a ported bomber bit.
Apparently highland ponies don’t always have a lot of room for their tongues. I ordered the bit from the horse bit bank, which means I have a 30 day trial. They were very helpful when I spoke to then and they confirmed that a port would be a great way to go.
First test ride went pretty well. Isla seemed lighter in my hand and the canter was definitely better. So we’ve carried on riding in it and I think she likes it. Our lesson the other day with Libby shakesby went fab. Isla had the most amazing trot I’ve ever had from her! Chatting with Libby she think it is the right move although there are a few kinks to iron out in the trot, the canter is more secure.
I was hoping to try it this weekend in a new situation, but the weather has changed our plans. So will have to wait till next week to test it. Not risking towing in a storm! Think we will enjoy a nice hack in the calm before storm ciara arrives.
